Director of Swine Health

Dr. Marisa Rotolo joined The National Pork Board as the Director of Swine Health in December 2023. Dr. Rotolo’s current work includes overseeing NPB’s Swine Disease Research task force and supporting NPB programs such as the Certified Swine Sampler Collector program, Secure Pork Supply and AgView®, and is involved in multiple industry-related working groups.

Background

Marisa comes to NPB from Pig Improvement Company (PIC) of North America, where she was a health assurance veterinarian for four years. At PIC, Dr. Rotolo managed the health of owned and contract multiplication farms as well as leading efforts for foreign animal disease preparedness. In addition to this work, she managed health requirements for live animal exports to many countries across the globe. She was also heavily involved in the development of the PRRS Resistant Pig. Prior to PIC, she was a postdoctoral research associate in a cooperative agreement between the USDA Center of Epidemiology and Animal Health and the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine, focusing on validating diagnostic tools and developing surveillance strategies for foreign animal diseases. 

Education

Dr. Rotolo earned a BS degree in Biological Sciences from University of Denver, graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Iowa State University, and completed her PhD in Veterinary Microbiology from Iowa State University with an emphasis in preventive medicine, focused on production animal disease surveillance. 

Industry Involvement

She is a leader within the veterinary community and is involved with numerous industry committees, including AASV and the American Veterinary Medical Association, and has participated in the National Pork Board’s FAD Research task force. Marisa currently serves as co-lead of the AASV Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) Elimination task force. The task force is focused on laying the foundation for a potential elimination program for PEDV. This task force was commissioned to debate knowledge gaps, explore tools for disease control, and serve as subject matter experts to outline a PEDV category for U.S. SHIP. Marisa also co-chairs the AASV Transboundary and Emerging Diseases committee.
