This study was designed to determine the amount of bacteria in the air of a swine confinement finishing barn using media designed to resuscitate injured organisms. In addition to knowing how much bacteria were in the air, we also wanted to identify some of the bacteria collected. This study shows that there are large numbers of bacteria in the air of the confinement facility. Our media recovered more bacteria than other media that did not resuscitate injured organisms. When identified, most of the bacteria were found to be common to air. This research shows that injured organisms must be considered so under-reporting of bacterial number does not occur. Furthermore, air should be considered a possible source of contamination for both animals and animal caretakers.
