Concentrations and production rates of major ambient contaminants (moisture, dust particles, carbon dioxide, ammonia and hydrogen sulphide), were established in 5 farrowing rooms. Comparison between 3 common flooring systems (solid floor, raised crate design and fully perforated crate floors) and between batch and continuous farrowing regimes were carried out. Total mean contaminant concentrations approached suggested limits although min. ventilation rates recorded exceeded recommended values.
